Cadence, also known by her nickname DJ K-Dance, is a popular DJ, dancer, and musical artist character in Club Penguin. After making her big break hosting the Dance-A-Thon, she has gone to have great success, hosting several more events, inviting various guest stars, and even making her own songs.

Character[]

Design[]

Cadence is a peach penguin. In 2008, she originally wore a bright pink, slightly messy wig with straight bangs covering the top of her eyes. She wears green headphones with white shells over her wig, and she also wears a yellow scarf with small pink stripes. At this time she was not named and only referred to as a DJ.

In 2009, Cadence's design was updated and she was given a name. She now had eyelashes, and wore a short purple wig swept to the side, with a pink lower part, and small tufts sticking out in the back. Her new headphones (her favorite accessory[1] which she hates taking off[2]) were gray with lime green shells. Her scarf now had evenly sizes yellow and pink stripes, and she now wore wristbands with the same design as her scarf. She also started to wear white sneakers with black accents. Cadence made her scarf and colored her wig herself.[3]

First seen in the music video for Puffle Party (Gotta Have a Wingman) (and in-game since August 2013), Cadence now wears a gray short-sleeved shirt with purple ends on the sleeves, and the bottom of the shirt, which is rolled up and tied on one end.

During the Star Wars Takeover, Cadence appeared as "Princess Cadence", dressed like Princess Leia from the Star Wars franchise. Her wig is shaped into two buns on the side around her headphones' cups. She wears a plain white robe with a metallic gray belt. She does not wear her scarf, wristbands, or shoes. She is usually depicted within a hologram.

Personality[]

Cadence is free-spirited and does things her own way.[4] She has a love for music and enjoys sharing it with and involving others through her DJing. She often using slang terms such as "that's ice" or "epic win" to express excitement or describe things she likes. She regularly abbreviates words, shortening "you" and "are" to just "u" and "r". When leaving, she usually says "Cadence OUT!"

Cadence is very appreciative of her fans, regarding them as "the BEST" and responsible for letting her live her dream; she wrote the song You Got This as thanks for this support.[5] She is also very encouraging and thankful to others in whatever activities or jobs they do.

Cacence loves wearing bright colors. Her favorite "fashion accessory" is her smile.[4] She finds bugs scary to some extent. During the Halloween Party 2015, she states this is because "they're always squirming around in caves".

While appearing as a meetable mascot, Cadence regularly encourages group participation. She tells other penguins to dance or play instruments, and tells them to move to specific locations in a room or use specific emotes. She also utilizes call and response, such as "when I say DONT DANCE u say NO CHANCE!" In later years, she sometimes prompted singalongs of her own songs.

Songs[]

Cadence has produced a number of songs since 2012. Except for The Party Starts Now, Puffle Shuffle, and You Got This, all songs are with the Penguin Band.

Development[]

According to staff member Deamama, Cadence's character was originally meant to be a cool and hip rockstar, but also "friendly towards the Earth". After Cadence's proper debut in early 2009, the team discovered players loved the rockstar aspect of her character. Designers and writers gradually changed her personality and the way she talked to lean into this and make her more of a "superstar" character.[6]

History[]

Pre-debut[]

When Cadence was young, she took clarinet lessons for reasons she does not explain.[7] Early on, Cadence struggled to stand out.[8] She used to sing in igloos when she was starting out.[9]

2008[]

DJ tour guide[]

Cadence first appeared in issue 152 of the Club Penguin Times newspaper, published on September 11, 2008. At this time, she was unnamed and only referred to as "a DJ tour guide". She hosted the "Special Night Club Edition" of the "In Focus" tour. When giving her tour of the Night Club, she refuses to let the tour takers stand idly, handing them each headphones and telling them to either mix beats or dance. She demonstrates the DJ3K, expressing that anyone can make music, and encourages the tour takers to dance, saying "when you dance, you become part of the song." She then DJs while her group dances, and they finish the tour in the Dance Lounge.[10]

(Note: Cadence is only referenced to be one and the same as this tour guide retroactively. A Card-Jitsu card features this tour guide and the card is named "CADENCE AND THE KEEPER". Additionally, this same In Focus tour is reused a few times in 2009 and 2010 with nearly identical text, and the art of the tour guide is modified to have Cadence's new design and she is referred to by name instead of "DJ tour guide".)

2009[]

Dance-A-Thon[]

CPT 169 Cadence dance-a-thon

Cadence at the Dance-A-Thon

At the beginning of the year, the Gift Shop gives some penguins a sneak peek of the January 2009 Penguin Style catalog. Among them is Cadence, referred to as a "popular local DJ", who is impressed with the dance-themed clothing, and gets an idea.[11] A week later, Cadence, referred to by name for the first time, publishes an announcement that she will hold a member-only dance party in the Night Club on January 15, the Dance-A-Thon, alongside a brand new dance competition game hosted by Cadence herself.[12]

Cadence is first meetable as a mascot during the Dance-A-Thon party. The dance competition game is revealed to be Dance Contest, a new permanent mini-game in the Night Club. In this game, she is displayed in the menu, prompting the player to pick between the various game modes, or receive instructions on how to play. After a song ends, she shares the player's results and statistics. Even after the Dance-A-Thon ends, Cadence invites penguins to show her their moves in Dance Contest.[13] Later, she and Sensei are both asked by the Club Penguin Times about the new multiplayer games they host.[14] Cadence also reviews the month of January, making particular note of the Night Club Rooftop, and the Winter Fiesta 2009.[15]

Cadence later appears as a special guest during the Penguin Play Awards 2009 as a meetable mascot. In April, Cadence announces that she has found "three epic tunes" for penguins to dance to, and they will be available to in Dance Contest members on April 24.[16] The tracks are Let's Bounce, Go West, and Patrick's Jig.

Music Jam 2009[]

When the Music Jam 2009 is announced at the beginning of July, Cadence and the Penguin Band are revealed to be making appearances.[17] Cadence is meetable during the party. As the Music Jam wraps up late into the month, Cadence gives another "In Focus" tour, identical to the first one she did in September 2008, but now addressed by name.[18]

2010[]

Cadence is meetable at the Penguin Play Awards 2010. In April, she once again hosts the same "In Focus" tour of the Night Club she did twice before.[19] Cadence is meetable again at Music Jam 2010.

2011[]

Cadence is meetable at the Puffle Party 2011. During the party, she debuts her purple puffle, Lolz. Later in the year, Cadence works with costume designers to create new clothing for the June 2011 Penguin Style catalog, focusing on designs styles that are easy to dance while wearing and stand out, as well as trendy scarves, hats, and T-shirts.[20] She is meetable again during the Music Jam 2011.

2012[]

Fashion Show[]

In mid-January, it is announced a Fashion Show will be held in the Gift Shop at the beginning of February. Cadence is involved in preparation, and mentions the show will need stylists, photographers, models, and more.[21] When the island starts to tip underwater during the Underwater Expedition, Cadence is asked if the show will be canceled. She laughs, and states she does not care if the island were to sink, and assures the show will go on, figuring everyone can "throw on scuba gear or something."[22] This ends up not happening as the island is saved a week later. When the Fashion Show starts, Cadence appears as a meetable mascot. A reporter speaks with Cadence during the show, and she invites everyone to attend even if they next to nothing to wear, stating it to be a party regardless. She is thrilled by everyone's outfits as well.[23]

Ultimate Jam[]

CPT 352 Cadence talking to fans

Cadence talking to fans

At the beginning of July, with new music-themed outfits in the new Penguin Style catalog, rumor circulates that this year's Music Jam will be "ginormous". Cadence is reached for comment, and although she wishes to not ruin the surprise, she mentions she will be calling in her friends CeCe and Rocky to join, and suggests there will be a lot of new things at the party, from songs to performances.[24] The following week, Cadence announces the Make Your Mark: Ultimate Jam, and that during the party, she and the Penguin Band will perform her new song, The Party Starts Now. CeCe and Rocky will also help with the show, and making a music video of the song.[25] Cadence also hosts "Ask Cadence" in the Club Penguin Times for the next few weeks.

During the Make Your Mark: Ultimate Jam, Cadence appears not only as a meetable mascot, but also performs with the Penguin Band at the Epic Show every five minutes, playing her new song, The Party Starts Now. As the party nears its end, while continuing to put on performances, Cadence puts the finishing touches on The Party Starts Now's music video with CeCe and Rocky.[26] The music video releases on July 25.

Operation: Blackout[]

In Operation: Blackout, Herbert P. Bear, now known to the public, destroys the Elite Penguin Force's HQ and captures their agents. He also steals sunlight with his Solar Laser, plunging the island into darkness. He takes over the island and declares himself the leader and imposes tyrannical rules. Over time, the opposition to his rule by citizens increases. Among those against Herbert include Cadence, Rory, Sensei, and the Penguin Band, albeit anonymously, who all contribute to finishing a half-written issue of the Club Penguin Times. Cadence declares Herbert a "major drag" and that "his plan's going down! Operation fail!"[27] Herbert is later foiled and the island is saved.

As the year ends, Cadence and other mascots give thanks. Cadence expresses her appreciation for the past year and the help with her first music videos (including Ghosts Just Wanna Dance and Cool In The Cold, which were not mentioned in-game like The Party Starts Now) and hints that she has exciting future plans.[28]

2013[]

Hollywood Party[]

On the first day of the year, Aunt Arctic looks for details on what the next big thing coming to Club Penguin is: one of the penguins she encounters is Cadence, who is planning something big.[29] As January ends, Cadence brings up her plan again, hinting it will involve a red carpet, a limo, awards, and more, but is too busy preparing to share more.[30] Cadence later confirms her plan is for a Hollywood Party she is hosting. The party will contain three movies, an award show, and special guests Sensei, Gary the Gadget Guy, and Aunt Arctic. Cadence encourages everyone to rehearse and get ready.[31]

During the Hollywood Party, Cadence appears as a meetable mascot. She encourages actors to help out on the movie sets at the Snow Forts[32] and helps with choreography at the Penguin High 3 Set.[33] Halfway through the party, Awards Show begins, and Cadence invites actors and directors to attend to collect awards.[34]

Star Wars Takeover[]

Before and during the Star Wars Takeover, Cadence appears as "Princess Cadence" (a parody of Princess Leia from Star Wars). As the Death Star looms in space in mid-July, Princess Cadence sends a transmission to Gary, pleading the island's residents for help, announcing that Darth Herbert is on his way to destroy the island in his Death Star. She asks everyone to stop the Death Star and triumph over the dark side to save the galaxy.[35] When the Star Wars Takeover begin, Princess Cadence asks penguins to join the Rebel Alliance to board the Millennium Falcon at the Dock to fly to Tatooine to battle Stormtroopers occupying the sandy planet, while she works on gaining access to the Death Star.[36]

A week later, Rebels gain access to inside the Death Star. Princess Cadence states the plan is to sneak through the space base, avoiding Stormtroopers and Imperial Officers, and steal Darth Herbert's plans so they can be analyze to determine the Death Star's weakness so it can be destroyed.[37] She also warns that Darth Herbert's forces are getting stronger, and are capturing anyone dancing at the Dance Club, requesting more penguins join the Rebels' cause.[38] Once the stolen plans are analyzed, the Death Star's weakness is discovered and Cadence instructs Rebels to pilot X-Wings, launching from Yavin 4, and fire blasts into the Death Star's weak point while dispatching enemy TIE Fighters.[39] With the Death Star destroyed, Princess Cadence awards a Rebel Reward Medal and peace returns, although Darth Herbert escapes. The Millennium Falcon leaves to explore the galaxy.[40]

Surfin' Summer Jam[]

CPT 408 Cadence ready to surf

Cadence ready to surf

In mid-August, immediately after the Star Wars Takeover ends, Cadence announces she is planning a summer party the following week that will be a paradise for surfers and bikers, as a way to cool off from saving the galaxy. She suggests penguins soak up the sun and practice dance moves and surfing before the party begins. She also mentions she will be inviting her friends McKenzie and Brady to join.[41] When the Teen Beach Movie Summer Jam starts, Cadence appears as a meetable mascot. She recommends visiting the Epic Wave to surf like she has been doing, or Big Momma's to relax with friends[42] and watch her friends McKenzie and Brady perform, declaring it an "INSANE show".[43]

2014[]

At the beginning of January, Cadence is interested in the new prehistoric-themed clothing in the January 2014 Penguin Style catalog, and recommends "REALLY retro" items to show off.[44]

Muppets World Tour[]

In early March, Cadence announces that The Muppets are stopping at Club Penguin as part of a world tour of theirs, and Cadence will be collaborating with the Muppets and is working to set up stages for them. She also announces everyone will be able to perform with the Muppets at the upcoming Muppets World Tour party.[45] She shares tips for performing for varied audience, suggesting hanging out with them before the show and learning a few words in their language.[46] During the party, she receives a sneak peek of the finale show at the Muppet Stage and is thrilled.[47] After the finale opens and penguins perform their own acts on stage, Cadence and Dot both watch and are very amused. As the Muppets leave for the next stop on their tour, Cadence wishes them luck.[48]

Music Cruise[]

In the middle of June, Franky mentions in "Ask Franky" that Cadence will be bringing in bands for an upcoming music event in July.[49] During the Penguin Cup, Cadence's new mix "Penguin Cup Anthem" plays in the Town and Plaza. She mentions that once the last ball of the cup is kicked, she will be throwing a party.[50] She later mentions that while working on the mix, she was hit with inspiration and worked with the Penguin Band to come up with the idea to launch a new game, SoundStudio, to allow anyone to create and share their own music in the Dance Club. She also mentions she has another, bigger idea planned.[51] Cadence later mentions in Ask Cadence that there will be a Music Cruise arriving, and in addition to her and the Penguin Band performing on it, more stars will be showing up: DJ Cole Plante, Zendaya, Violetta, and Sabrina Carpenter.[52] The Music Cruise was rented[53] in order to transport these stars to Club Penguin, in addition to Cadence finding it fun to have a party on a boat.[54]

During the Music Jam 2014, Cadence appears as a meetable mascot. She also appears alongside the Penguin Band on the Music Cruise's Main Stage as one of the performers, singing Best Day Ever. Clicking her while she performs allows the player to receive the Cadence's Aug 2013 Giveaway. Cadence invites everyone to watch not just her and the band perform, but the other special guests. She mentions she wrote Best Day Ever while thinking about the great times she has had on the island.[55] During the party, she also interviews the guests, talking with them about their music and asking them which emotes they want their audiences to use.[56][57][58][59] When the party ends and the guests leave, Cadence expresses her thanks to them, the Penguin Band, and everyone who watched the performances.[60]

For the new year, Cadence resolves to create something bigger and better than SoundStudio.[61]

2015[]

SoundStudio Party[]

CPT 488 Cadence talent show

Cadence hosting a talent show

In February, Cadence releases a new single, You've Got This. Aunt Arctic interviews her about the song and she mentions that she tried to make her sound more natural for this song, and it is both a thank you to fans and a shout-out to other artists, and she also hints at a talent show coming up.[62] This talent show is later revealed to be the SoundStudio Party, featuring a studio at the Snow Forts that Cadence and two secret judges will judge at;[63] this party doubles as a promotion for the new SoundStudio App. During the party, Cadence appears at each of the four themed stages at that players can perform at in the Snowball Records studio: pop, rock, dance, and dubstep. Alongside her is Dot, in disguise as one of several objects, and either Dubstep or Glitterpants. After the party ends, Cadence talks about how she is impressed by everyone's powerful performances at the talent show, and she is excited for the next performance.[64]

10th Anniversary & MascBots[]

As Club Penguin's tenth anniversary approaches, Cadence is finishing a studio session when she announces she will attend, to party.[65] During the 10th Anniversary Party, appears as one of many meetable mascots. One of the MascBots made by Gary is modeled after him and appears at the Ski Village to talk about the room.

Later during the Anniversary Party, the MascBots all start to malfunction, and by the time the Halloween Party 2015 begins, they go haywire and cause mischief. Gary comes up with a solution to stop them: scare them with things the penguins they are modeled after are scared of, and then deactivate them. Cadence states she finds bugs scary. Finding one and bringing it to the Cadence Bot allows it to be scared and deactivated.

At the end of the year, Aunt Arctic asks many penguins about their favorite moment of 2015. Cadence recalls how much she enjoyed watching the performances at the SoundStudio Party.[66]

2016[]

Music Jam return[]

During the Music Jam 2016 in November, Cadence appears as a meetable mascot and also performs with the Penguin Band at the Snow Forts, playing all of their previous songs. During the party, every few days, Cadence asks the player to visit a certain character (the band members, Klutzy, Dubstep, and the Keeper of the Boiler Room; for Cadence's day, Franky asks instead). Once the party ends, Cadence is very thankful for all the fans making this best Music Jam ever, and the Penguin Band for performing on stage with her, particularly liking singing duets with Franky.[67]

Book appearances[]

Pick Your Path series[]

In the Pick Your Path books, the reader is presented as being a character within each story as the protagonist. As such, "you" is used here to refer to the character representing the reader, as is done in the books. Due to the nature of these books, there are many branching paths, with many mutually-exclusive story possibilities; not all are listed here.

  • Star Reporter: At the start of the book, if you decide to pursue a story on a team red vs blue hockey match at the Ice Rink, you unintentionally blind the red team's goalie with a camera flash, causing the blue team to win. You challenge the blue captain to various activities in order for her to agree to a rematch with the red team, and one of the activities is Dance Contest. Cadence appears as a judge, where she DJs while you and the blue captain take turns dancing. After each dance for two minutes, Cadence is impressed, and declares you the winner; the teams eventually have a rematch and red wins.

Dancing with Cadence[]

Cadence is a secondary character in Dancing with Cadence. At the start of the book, you and your friend decide to enter a contest Cadence is hosting to find a dance crew for a concert on the Night Club Rooftop. However, the auditions start in one hour. You want to observe the other entrants to make sure your routine is unique, but your friend wants to go to the Gift Shop to buy stylish clothes to impress Cadence. Your friend suggests splitting up to do both. From here, the first "pick a path" choice is presented, and the story varies depending on this choice and further choices. The first choice is to either go shopping with your friend or split up, with you going to the Night Club.

If you go shopping together and choose sporty outfits, Cadence is impressed with your dancing and her and the other two judges, a purple puffle and Aunt Arctic, allow you to be one of the ten groups to move to the second round, occurring a few hours later. If you go to the Dojo for inspiration, you decide to incorporate ninja moves into your second routine, allowing you to pass to the final round as one of three groups. If decide to have a new fan of yours join your routine for the final round, the three of you pass and Cadence declares your team the winner, and you are able to perform on the rooftop with her.

If you split up, you learn that auditions have been temporarily canceled. Cadence is upset because the Keeper of the Boiler Room is missing. You find clues in the Night Club pointing to the Keeper heading underground. You may end up at the Pizza Parlor, and help a chef make pizzas, with Cadence making them for the first time, finding making pizza similar to dancing. Afterwards, if you follow the right leads, helping puffles and penguins along the way, you are able to follow more leads until you eventually come across a rescue worker who found the Keeper and a yellow puffle, having saved them from collapsing snow. Cadence is thankful for the help and offers to have you and your friend join her crew without auditions. Another path has you find the two puffles directly, and save them, resulting in Cadence giving you and your friend invitations to a secret concert the Penguin Band is holding, before leaving. After a long series of clues, if you successfully are able to make it to the concert, Cadence also attends.

In some endings of the dance contest, Cadence may not select you to dance but she may give you some sort of merchandise as compensation, or allow you to still help with the concert. In some endings where the Keeper goes missing, the Keeper may end up being found without your involvement, although Cadence thanks you for your help anyway.

Mascot appearances[]

Cadence could first be met as a mascot during the Dance-A-Thon. Since then she typically appeared at dancing or music-themed parties. Clicking on the box button on her Player Card allowed the player to receive an autographed background. On July 27, 2010, the first stamps were introduced, including the Cadence stamp, which could be earned by being in the same room as Cadence. The first time Cadence could be met after her stamp was released was the Puffle Party 2011. Cadence's stamp could also be earned when viewing her and the Penguin Band's performance at the Epic Show during the Make Your Mark: Ultimate Jam. Cadence's Aug 2013 Giveaway, her newest background, could be obtained by clicking on Cadence during her performance on the Main Stage during the Music Jam 2014.

On October 28, 2011, an update for the Friends List was released, allowing mascots to be added from their Player Card. Mascots always instantly accepted a friend request, and when they were on the player's Friends List, their current giveaway could be obtained at any time. The first time Cadence could be met after the Friends List update was the Make Your Mark: Ultimate Jam. Mascots could not be sent a request by searching their name like normal players, and instead an icon and message appeared instead. For Cadence, this message was "Cadence is rehearsing new dance moves. To add her as a friend, you must meet her on the island."

For the preset messages Cadence could use while appearing as a mascot, see Cadence/Mascot scripts. For a list of blog posts featuring scheduled meetup times, see Mascot meetups#Cadence.

In Cadence's case, she initially claimed "backgrounds are totally the new buddy lists"[71] but later claims "i totally DONT JAM with buddy lists" and "there are just too many penguins!" She also considered anyone who has received her background to be buds with her.[3]
  • During the Dance-A-Thon, a fan-made rumor insisted that Cadence would only appear on the Night Club Rooftop if no players stood on the launch pad (often referred to as "the metal") in the room. This rumor was later officially acknowledged in the "In Focus" tour in issue 196 of the Club Penguin Times, where Cadence dismissed this, assuring "you can settle on the 'metal' - it's all ice to me".
  • Cadence first hosted "Ask Cadence", replacing "Ask Aunt Arctic", in issue 351 of the Club Penguin Times. She also hosted Ask Cadence in issue 352, issue 353, issue 381, issue 382, issue 409, issue 455, issue 457, issue 467, issue 487 (renamed to "Ask DJ Cadence"), issue 545, and issue 561.
    • Hovering the mouse over her portrait in the column caused her to close her eyes, smile wider, and raise her flipper up. Only the flipper raise was retained when her portrait was updated to a new art style in issue 455.
  • Since 2012, some secret sections in the Club Penguin Times were presented as being from various characters. Cadence shared secrets in the following issues: "Puffle Dance Machine!" (335), "Dance Contest Hidden Levels!" (350), "Purple Puffle Dance Moves" (351), "Fashion Tips" (380), "Dance Contest" (381), "DJ3K Superstar" (383), "Dress Like a Superstar" (402), "Flash Mobs" (442, 490), "Bell Songs for the Plaza!" (478), "SoundStudio Tip" (486), and "Cart Surfer Tips" (508).
  • Since 2015, the back side of the Club Penguin Times sometimes featured fan art with comments from a character, instead of an "Ask (character)" question. Cadence commented on fan art in the following issues: 497, 515, 518, 519, 525, 535, 553, 554, and 562.
