Puffles were round, energetic, furry creatures native to Club Penguin Island, they were discovered on November 2005 and became adoptable on March 17, 2006. Adopted puffles stayed at their owner's home or backyard and could be taken for a walk.

Language

Not much is known about puffle language. Their main sound was squeaking, as heard in Puffle Roundup and PSA Secret Missions, and seen in the Penguin Mail postcard. Puffles could speak to each other without penguins understanding them, but they were able to indicate with gestures or drawings to penguins.

Abilities

All puffles had special abilities, such as seemingly short range telekinesis, and summoning their favorite toys at will out of thin air. Each puffle species could summon their preferred objects including a sleep mask. Puffles had a keen sense of treasure hunting and could perform tricks, too. Sometimes, puffles rushed together to the same destination, forming a mighty stampede.

Limitations

While members could adopt up to 75 puffles of all the adoptable species, non-members could adopt up to 2 puffles of limited species (blue, red, rainbow at the Rainbow Puffle Party, gold at the 10th Anniversary Party in the Club Penguin App, and green alien at Operation: Crustacean), however, these non-member limits did not apply to unlockable puffles. Only 10 puffles could fit in an igloo, the rest went to the igloo's backyard.

Care

If all the stats of a puffle were empty while its owner is inactive, it would send a postcard to its owner and abandon its owner to return to the wild. That could be prevented by filling the puffle's stats to keep them balanced.

As a puffle's owner in its own igloo or backyard, clicking the puffle made a simple menu appear, which showed the puffle's stats and 3 buttons could be picked:

Move to Backyard/Igloo button: Sent the puffle to the backyard or igloo. Usable in the backyard and igloo. In the backyard, puffle stats could not be depleted.
Walk button: Took the puffle for a walk alongside its owner. Usable in the backyard and igloo. While out for a walk, puffles could use stations to fill their stats: Eat Stations, Play Stations, Clean Stations, and Rest Stations.
Comb button: Opened the Puffle Interface. Usable in the igloo and not on Puffle Creatures, however, it contained additional options:
- Food tab: Feed the puffle with Puffle Food to fill its food stat. Feeding it with its favorite food made all its stats full.
- Play tab: Give a toy to the puffle to fill its play stat. Each puffle species only played with its own toys (Example: Red puffles only played with Bowling Pins and the Red Puffle's Cannon, they would not play with the White Puffle's Skate, the Brown Puffle's Rocket, etc.). Super toys could be bought in the Puffles! Catalog.
- Clean tab: Select the bath and brush to fill the puffle's clean stat.
- Rest tab: Use the sleep icon to fill the puffle's rest stat.
- Dress tab: Place Puffle Hats on the puffle.
- Pet Papers: See the Puffle Handbook, the puffle's Adoption Certificate, tips for Puffle Digging, or return the puffle to its natural habitat.

The original 10 puffle species could use Pet Furniture in their owner's igloo to fill their stats themselves when they needed to. Right after a puffle's stats were full while being walked or in the Puffle Interface, it would jump around fireworks.

Each puffle had a different personality and style, so players could find the one that fit them best. More than 25 species of puffle, including real-world animal counterparts, were discovered and recognized.

	Purple Turkish Van Cat	A drawing of it was discovered in the Doodle Dimension at the April Fools' Party 2012. A real one is in the video Puffle Trouble among a crowd of puffles. A picture of it could be seen in Jangrah's igloo in the Club Penguin: Monster Beach Party TV special.
	Black Bat	One was seen through the Mansion Attic telescope of the Halloween Party 2012. Featured on the Puffle Bat Key Pin, the Puffle Bat Tee and the Halloween Tee. Members could turn into one during Halloween Parties 2013 and 2016 by dancing as a vampire. Many bat puffles fly together in the Club Penguin: Halloween Panic! TV special.
	Dragon	Rumored due to an appearance of a red puffle dragon in a foreign Club Penguin Magazine issue. Members could transform into the green and blue dragon puffles during the Medieval Party 2013 by using their respective potion. Art of green dragon puffles were in the Hallway at the Halloween Party 2012 and in the Club Penguin: Halloween Panic! TV special.
	Brown Reindeer	Members could transform into one during the Holiday Party 2012 by eating its magic cookie. Featured on the Holiday Cookies Pin as a cookie, and on the Reindeer Puffle Sweater as a silhouette. A decoration featuring a red-nosed reindeer puffle could be seen at the Dock during the Holiday Party 2013. They are slightly larger than ordinary puffles.
	Unicorn	Members could transform into the white and black unicorn puffles during the Medieval Party 2013 by using their respective potion. The yellow unicorn puffle was adoptable.
	White Chicken	Members were able to transform into one during the Medieval Party 2013 when failing a potion recipe. During the Muppets World Tour, penguins who joined a member's Salad Tongs act became a chicken puffle until the act ended.
	Gray	Prior to being created for stickers at the Club Penguin Headquarters on May 2016, there were various gray stone puffle statues found in-game, grey puffle figures with buck teeth appeared in The Fair 2014 Prizes Catalog, and the Grey Puffle Costume had been released.

Some games were compatible with the original 10 puffles: Paint by Letters: My Puffle, Balloon Pop, Puffle Launch, and Pufflescape. The application Puffle Wild was compatible with every puffle, except for alien puffles.

History

The Great Puffle Discovery

November 15, 2005: Creatures are spotted at the Ice Rink, Snow Forts, and Night Club.
November 20, 2005: One of the creatures is captured, proving they exist, as they were "not taken seriously" before, according to The Penguin Times. The creatures are deemed safe and friendly, and are studied.
November 23, 2005: Since the name of the creatures is unknown, a naming contest is held to choose a name for them. Players could submit their entries by email, promising 5000 coins for the winner(s), and a 3 day membership for the non-member winner(s) too.^[2]
December 7, 2005: The name "puffle" is chosen for the creatures.
December 14, 2005: The game Puffle Roundup is released so penguins can help capture all the puffles.
March 17, 2006: The Pet Shop is opened, with blue puffles, pink puffles, black puffles, and green puffles ready for adoption.
April 14, 2006: Love Your Pet is released.
August 25, 2006: Purple puffles are adoptable for members.
September 29, 2006: Puffles can be taken out for a walk.
November 24, 2006: Penguins are able to bathe their puffles.
December 8, 2006: Rockhopper brings red puffles from Rockhopper Island to Club Penguin and they become adoptable in the Pet Shop.
October 26, 2007: A yellow puffle is spotted at the Forest during the Halloween Party 2007.
November 30, 2007: Yellow puffles are adoptable for members.
February 13, 2009: Puffles start playing with their Pet Furniture.
February 20, 2009: During the Puffle Party 2009, white puffles were spotted at the Dojo Courtyard and Ski Hill.
March 6, 2009: White puffles are adoptable for members.
February 18, 2010: Orange puffles are seen at the Ski Village during the Puffle Party 2010.
February 25, 2010: Orange puffles are adoptable.
January 17, 2011: In the Wilderness Expedition 2011, members discover adoptable brown puffles in a cave just off the coast of Club Penguin.
March 8, 2011: Pet Shop Rebuild is done, new Puffle Food is introduced, the Puffle Interface is launched, and the puffles have a new look.
October 4, 2011: Puffle Hats are released.
February 11, 2013: Rainbow puffles make an appearance in the official Puffle Party (Gotta Have a Wingman) music video, confirming their true existence.
March 7, 2013: Construction begins on the Puffle Hotel, a building tall enough to get to the cloud where the rainbow puffles are.
March 21, 2013: The Puffle Party 2013 arrives with the new Puffle Hotel. The Rainbow Cannon on the Puffle Hotel Roof launches members to the Cloud Forest to adopt rainbow puffles.
May 30, 2013: The price to purchase a puffle is dropped from 800 to 400 coins.
June 20, 2013: Puffles start digging up treasure around the island, introducing a new way to earn coins.
July 11, 2013: Puffles jump around fireworks for reaching full stats in the Puffle Interface. They can also dig up rare items.
August 15, 2013: Puffles start digging up for food.
October 3, 2013: Puffles can use the Puffle Snack Station to eat 3 types of pizza.
November 14, 2013: Members can do a quest to adopt gold puffles.
November 21, 2013: Operation: Puffle begins and the Puffle Hotel renovates.
January 23, 2014: Members can adopt up to 40 puffles and keep them in their new backyards, just in time for the addition of dinosaur puffles, which are adoptable for a limited time.
April 17, 2014: The Puffle Party 2014 starts, along with Border Collie and Tabby Cat puffles adoptable for members, the opening of the Puffle Park, and the introduction of Puffle Tricks.
August 21, 2014 - September 3, 2014: Snowman puffles are available for members to create and adopt for a limited time.
October 23, 2014 - November 5, 2014: Members can rescue and adopt ghost puffles for a limited time.
December 4, 2014: Penguins enter The Wilds and find 17 new adoptable puffle creatures.
December 18, 2014 - December 29, 2014: Members can be given a blue crystal puffle as a gift from the Merry Walrus for a limited time.
March 26, 2015: The Puffle Party 2015 starts, and puffle wild creatures can now be adopted by members at the Puffle Wild.
April 22, 2015: Snowman puffles return at the Frozen Fever Party 2015, to be adopted by members.
May 21 – June 17, 2015: Only on the Club Penguin App, everyone can adopt free rainbow puffles without completing tasks, at the Rainbow Puffle Party.

August 17 - September 28, 2016: Snowman puffles return to be adopted by members at the Frozen Fever Party 2016.
September 28 - November 2, 2016: Ghost puffles return to be adopted by members at the Halloween Party 2016.
November 30, 2016 - January 4, 2017: Snowman puffles and blue crystal puffles are once again adoptable for members at the Holiday Party 2016.
March 29 - 30, 2017: Due to all players receiving membership for the end of Club Penguin, everyone could adopt member-only puffles.

Trivia

HQPufflePoster — A chart listing most puffles

"Almost 3000 submissions" were received from players suggesting a name for these creatures in the "Name That Critter!" contest in issue 7 of The Penguin Times. The Club Penguin Team eventually decided the winning name, "Puffles".^[3]
- The penguins that came up with the winning name were Yolam08, Wafflepye, and Gronnie.^[4]
Screenhog created the original puffles.^[5]
Postcards sent by puffles and Adopted Puffle postcards were sent by sys, along with the rest of automatically sent postcards.
Most puffles are about half as tall as a penguin,^[6] although white puffles are shorter than other varieties of puffles.
Playing cards in Portuguese with puffles on them were released in real life.
Players could see the names of other players' puffles in the igloo of their owner; however, this feature was removed.
Yarr, the Keeper of the Boiler Room, and the Keeper of the Stage went missing during March 2010, they were rescued underground and then Puffle Rescue released.
On the logo for the Puffle Party 2009, each letter had one of the colors of the original 10 puffle species, except for the 'Y' in 'PARTY', which had a magenta or fuchsia color similar to the one of a blue puffle's tongue.
In the 2010 Coins for Change results video, as the coin is traveling through the pipe, there is a buried saber-tooth puffle skull.
When puffles used Pet Furniture, their old look would be briefly used.
It is unknown if they inhabited Club Penguin Island before penguins.
Puffles could not be adopted without full stats, all adopted puffles started with full stats.
Screenhog was originally not going to give them a mouth, but Billybob and Rsnail convinced him to add a mouth.^[7]^[8]
2013 was the first time multiple puffles were discovered in one year since 2006.
- Multiple puffles were discovered again in 2014.
Before, puffles counted as a Hand Item so the owner could not hold a hand item while walking a puffle; however, a few years before Club Penguin shut down, it became possible to walk puffles and carry a hand item at the same time.
As of April 2014, if a player logged off while walking a puffle, the puffle would stay being walked, instead of returning to the owner's igloo or backyard automatically.
There were versions of puffles as hand items, although these were not obtainable. They functioned similarly to how Flare did in-game.
When puffles first came out, there were signs telling where to go to get puffles and puffles around the island.
Puffles were formerly nicknamed "Furballs" and once called "Fluffballs" in the Yearbook 2005-2006.
Puffles used to be able to be taken out for a walk only if they were healthy.
In Club Penguin Island, prior to its Waddle On Party, different puffle shapes appeared, for example, on Rockhopper, his Migrator, the Not Hot Hat, the Designer's Worktable, and the confetti that drops while receiving rewards.
At one point, elemental variants of puffles were considered, but were ultimately scrapped. They had the working name "Gloopies" and appear to have resembled a water droplet, snowball, and fireball.^[9]
Puffle Parties were held in either February, March, or April since 2009, at said celebrations, each puffle had their own decorated area and/or new species were discovered and/or it had puffle-themed exclusive items.
