— The tagline for the party

The Penguin Cup is a party in Club Penguin that began on June 19, and will end on July 1, 2014. It was first confirmed by Spike Hike in a Spike Saturday event.[1]

It is a soccer-themed party to celebrate the 2014 FIFA World Cup hosted in Brazil, but it has no intention of marketing it, unlike smaller advertising events such as the Adventure Party: Temple of Fruit, which indirectly marketed Innocent Smoothies.

Storyline

As the soccer season starts up again, Aunt Arctic and the Party Committee plan the biggest sports extravaganza the island has ever seen. Four of Club Penguin's original teams (Team Red - Hot Sauce, Team Blue - Sharks, Team Green - Space Squids, Team Yellow - Fluffies) compete for the cup in the ultimate soccer tournament.

Trivia

  • Prior to the party on May 1, 2014, Polo Field posted a picture of himself in real life on Twitter wearing a Beta Hat. Behind him was a whiteboard, with the words "uin Cup" written (his hat was blocking the start of the word ending with "uin".) [3]
  • A ball in a cup was found during the Future Party and it was located at the Futuristic Clothes Shop; the Robo Shop. This foreshadowed the party.
  • It was referenced in the newspaper during the Future Party about taking a trip to the past: "You may want to visit the first ever Penguin Cup, but you'll be a bit too early for this historic occasion."
  • Aunt Arctic waddled around during the party.[4]
  • The party's main area took place in the center of the island, the Stadium, which was remodeled for the occasion.
  • The June 2014 Penguin Style saw the release of the Custom Soccer Jerseys.
  • Although many people across the world refer to soccer as football, the Club Penguin Times refers to it as soccer. This was addressed in Ask Aunt Arctic. She was even debating calling it "foot-soccer".
  • CPSN (Club Penguin Sports Network) may be a reference to the famous ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network), which is owned jointly by The Walt Disney Company, and Hearst Corporation. The logo even looks a little similar by its italic style.
  • Members are able to get on a special igloo list if they apply the Soccer Pitch Location in their igloo.
  • The teams got official names and logos prior to the event.
  • There have been sports-based events in Club Penguin prior to the Penguin Cup, which were the Sports Party (2006), the Penguin Games (2008), and the Stadium Games (2010).
  • Everybody could play the Shootouts minigame by equipping the ball, pressing D, and partnering with another player. Using the points they obtain, they could get special items from the interface, including special power shoes.
  • This party shares the most similarities with the Monsters University Takeover out of any other parties. For starters, both parties occurred in June, almost a year apart from each other.
    • Both parties had four competing teams that the player could join, with a similar "choose your team" interface appearing when you first login. In addition, each team had their own decorated headquarters room. Also, each had their own free items (caps versus vuvuzelas) that could be obtained by anyone, regardless on whether they were on that team or not.
    • At both parties, player could rack up points for their team by playing in one exclusive minigame. They could also use these points to obtain items.
    • Finally, both parties were based on something in the real world (the Monsters University film versus the FIFA World Cup).
